About the Center of Peace and good

Center mir in dobro (CMD) welcomes pilgrims, hikers, and all visitors of Sveta Gora—tourists, athletes, artists, and those seeking a place to retreat and reflect. The peaceful setting and unique energy of Sveta Gora create the perfect environment for pause and contemplation. The name “MIR IN DOBRO” (peace and good) is not chosen by chance, as both are in short supply in today’s world.

CMD and TAU contact: +386 30 456 100 or cmd.tau@gmail.com

CMD offers:

The center can accommodate 28 people in total. It is intended for all people of goodwill—believers, non-believers, and everyone in between—so that PEACE AND GOOD may take root within them and be carried down into the valley, to be shared with others.

The center also includes a lecture room for seminars, workshops, courses, and similar events, along with a dedicated space for psychotherapy counselling. The core idea is to spend a few days at the centre—located at the endpoint of the 82-kilometre Gorizian Camino—after completing the walk, allowing time to fully absorb the experience in a unique setting before returning to the rhythm of everyday life.

The CMD offers a stunning view that stretches all the way to the sea, making it an ideal retreat for artistic souls seeking inspiration to create something truly unique in this extraordinary setting. CMD is also a great starting point for both short and longer nature walks, as well as for downhill mountain bike trails on the slopes of Sveta Gora.

Important information

Hiking

CMD, located on Sveta Gora at 682 metres above sea level, or Sveta Gora itself, is not only a destination but also an ideal starting point for walks, short excursions, and longer hikes.

If you’re looking to just stretch your legs on Sveta Gora, you can take a walk past the basilica, the cemetery, and the TAU Youth Center, ending at Frančiškov hrib, where you’ll find a statue of St. Francis. After about 500 metres of walking (roughly 10 minutes), the peak offers a stunning view.

The 260-metre-long tunnel running through Sveta Gora ends near Frančiškov hrib The entrance is located on the eastern slope, just off the road, at the sharp turn where the 10th station of the Stations of the Cross is situated. The trail through the tunnel is marked and partly equipped with a steel rope and a steel staircase. When walking through the tunnel, be cautious of slippery floors and, in some areas, low ceilings.

It offers an experience reminiscent of that faced by soldiers during the First World War, who found safety in the tunnels while outside, bullets and grenades brought death and destruction. A headlamp is a mandatory part of the equipment. A helmet is also recommended. There are also many caverns and trenches on the slope of Sveta Gora. The “trenches path” leads past them, starting at the 1st station of the Stations of the Cross.

The stone mausoleum of General Gonzaga is located in Vodice and can be seen from Sveta Gora, to the northwest. Near the summit (651m), you’ll find many military trenches and caverns. There is an easy, marked trail from Sveta Gora to Vodice.

Starting from the large car parking lot below the church, follow the steeply descending asphalt road. At Preški vrh, where the path to Plave branches off to the left and towards Grgar to the right, continue straight ahead. After a few steps, turn left onto the marked single-track trail, which begins to ascend. The mausoleum is about a 40-minute walk (approx. 2 km) from Sveta Gora.

If you continue walking from the mausoleum along the wider path, you will reach the Vodice Open Air Museum. Nearby, you’ll find caverns. To return to Preški vrh, follow the wide track that begins at the “Pot miru” information board and gently descends.

If you descend northwest from Sveta Gora to the crossroads at Preški vrh and turn right, you will begin descending towards Grgar and the Slatna stream valley. The spot where the stream is contained by a concrete dam was once a popular bathing area for the youth from Grgar. If you follow the stream up the valley, where several mills once stood, you can cool off in the pools during the summer.

An interesting themed circular trail, Urška Trail (Grgar – Sveta Gora – Grgar), runs along the path from Sveta Gora to Preški vrh and onwards to Grgar (typically in the reverse direction). This trail is dedicated to Urška Ferligoj, a shepherdess to whom Mary appeared on the slopes of Skalnica in 1539.

The Urška Trail, which is 7.9 kilometers long with 380 meters of ascent and 380 meters of descent, starts at St. Martin’s Church in Grgar and ends at the gravestone of Urška Ferligoj, located on the outside of the chancel of the same church. The walk from the church in Grgar to Sveta Gora via Preški vrh takes about an hour and a half, while the descent from Sveta Gora to Grgar, passing by Frančiškov hrib, takes approximately one hour.

The Bor Trail, which begins below Sveta Gora, in Grgar, the birthplace of the poet, playwright, storyteller, essayist and drama critic Vladimir Pavšič – Matej Bor (1913 – 1993), is part of the Slovenian Writers’ Trail. The easy, circular, signposted walking trail, which starts at the birthplace and monument of Matej Bor, takes about an hour to complete.

The Three Shrines Trail is a thematic trail linking three well-known and well-visited pilgrimage sites, Sveta Gora on the edge of the Banjščice plateau, Marijino Celje on the Kanal Kolovrat and Stara Gora (Castelmonte) above Cividale del Friuli. The first two are located in Slovenia, while the third is in Italy.

Climbing the three peaks that rise above Nova Gorica—Sveta Gora (682 m), Sabotin (609 m), and Škabrijel (647 m)—in a single go is a challenge in itself. Some locals even refer to it as the “The Triglav of Gorizia.” The circular trail spans approximately 23 kilometres and includes around 1,500 metres of ascent. The fastest hikers complete it in about 5.5 hours.

Martin’s Cross-Border Circular Trail also passes through Sveta Gora. This 260-kilometre circular route connects Vipava and Aquileia and is part of the Council of Europe’s Saint Martin of Tours Route. The full pilgrimage stretches approximately 2,500 kilometres, from Szombathely in Hungary to Tours in France.

This — the most beautiful of all the routes (:-)) — needs no further introduction, as you’re already on the website where all the details are just a click away.

The Sveta Gora Road Cycling Challenge is defined by its brutal final climb: 2.8 kilometres with an average gradient of 13%, peaking at an eye-watering 30% in the steepest sections. On 12 June 2021, it served as the finish line of the fourth stage of the 27th Tour of Slovenia, claimed by Tadej Pogačar.

The climb begins in Solkan, at the road bridge over the Soča River, next to a large parking lot. From there, it is about six kilometres to the top. The first half, up to the roundabout at Prevala, is relatively tame—but after that, the real test begins. Conquering Sveta Gora on a road bike is no small feat—those who manage it can confidently take on any climb.

A slightly easier—though still respectable—challenge is the ascent to Sveta Gora from Grgar via the Urška Trail. This trail includes some gravel sections, making it unsuitable for road bikes, but ideal for gravel, trekking, or mountain bikes. The final stretch of the climb begins just beyond Preški Vrh; it’s paved, but also the toughest part of the trail.

Thanks to the passionate efforts of the TCS (Trail Constructors Skalnica) mountain biking team, a number of exciting trails have been developed on the eastern slopes of Sveta Gora. These begin near the large public parking lot just below the basilica of Sveta Gora. Alternatively, at the top of Preški vrh, you can turn right toward Grgar, and from there follow the roads of the Banjšice plateau all the way to Čepovan, then loop back down the Čepovan Valley to your starting point.

From Grgar, you can cycle through the Čepovan Valley all the way to Most na Soči, then hop on a train back to Solkan. Another option from Čepovan is to ascend to Lokve, nestled in the heart of the Trnovo Forest, and return to Sveta Gora via Trnovo Plateau.

If you follow the asphalt road down toward Prevala, you can continue to Ravnica, then ride past Kromberk Castle toward the edge of the Vipava Valley, where countless cycling routes await. The nearby Karst region also offers a web of gravel roads and trails to explore. You can even to cycle across the Gorizia plain and the Friulian plain beyond the border, to the sea in the Gulf of Trieste, Tržič, the Soča estuary, Grado, Aquileia, Udine, Cividale del Friuli and beyond.

Psychological and spiritual support

The Gorizian Camino is a path with a spiritual purpose. Designed to guide individuals, couples, or groups on a reflective journey from Aquileia to Sveta Gora, it draws attention to the many parallels between walking and life’s journey. The true inspiration behind the Gorizian Camino is, in fact, life itself.

At the heart of this journey is the Center Mir in dobro (CMD), located in a historic place that has long been associated with healing and support made possible by the experience of Peace and the individual’s commitment and trust in the highest Good. Surrounded by the Basilica of Sveta Gora and the Franciscan Monastery, CMD is a place of grace, in itself imbued with a special therapeutic potential.

It welcomes all hikers who, after completing the Gorizian Camino, wish to take a few extra days to reflect on and process their experience. It offers a space to explore the parallels between the journey and everyday life before returning to daily routines. For those seeking support during this time, a qualified psychotherapist is available at CMD, and you can also speak with a priest if you wish.

Alongside regular therapy sessions, CMD also provides residential psychotherapy, especially suitable for more serious mental health issues, addiction, or burnout. Individuals or couples looking for a deeper, more focused approach to personal challenges may also benefit from this setting. The retreat into a peaceful environment offers an opportunity for those who struggle to find time and space in daily life to reconnect with themselves and pursue greater peace and well-being.

For psychotherapy support, contact Danijel at danijel.bandelj@gmail.com or 041/262-865.

Spiritual care is also available for visitors. For Holy Confession, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, or to speak with a priest or the Franciscans, contact: sveta.gora@rkc.si or 05 330 40 20 or 068/138-299.
