Stage description

The route from Via del Seminario offers a glimpse of some of the most interesting features of Gorizia: the Church of St John the Baptist, the pastoral centre of the Slovenian Christian community. Then comes the ancient Jewish ghetto with its beautiful synagogue. On Piazza De Amicis, the Renaissance palace of Attems reigns supreme. On Via Carducci, the palace of the former pawnbroker Monte di Pietà is worth mentioning. Then comes Arcivescovado Street with the sumptuous Cobenzl Palace, the seat of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Gorizia since the foundation of the Archdiocese.

The path leads to Travnik square, now called Piazza Vittoria or Victory Square, overlooked by the Church of St Ignatius, the Prefecture building and a number of important buildings. It's time to walk along the Raštel, the Cocevia street and then the D'Annunzio street, which was once simply called Salita al Castello (Ascent to the Castle). We enter the settlement on the castle hill through the mighty gates of Porto Leopoldina. This is the hill from which the town takes its name, Gorizia, which means hill. After visiting the castle, we descend along a forest path to the Rafut border crossing. If we continue on the Italian side, we will reach the Via Cappella road. Pass the chapel sculpted by Giovanni Pacassi (1702) and after a few steps we reach the border again near the church at Kostanjevica.

On Kostanjevica, just across the border, you can visit the tomb of the Bourbons, the last French kings, the Škrabec library and, in the monastery garden, the second largest publicly accessible collection of Bourbon roses in Europe, followed by a stroll through the streets of Nova Gorica, a young town that was created out of necessity after World War II, as Gorizia was left on the Italian side of the border. Built by the Brigadiers, Nova Gorica is today a modern city, associated with its "older sister".

The route takes us through the town centre to Europe Square and right next to the border to the river Soča, across it and along the foothills of Sabotin to the Solkan Bridge with the largest stone arch in the world. In Solkan, the final climb begins to Sveta Gora, the famous pilgrimage centre where, in 1539, Mary appeared to the shepherdess Urška Ferligoj and said to her: "Tell the people to build me a house here and beg me for mercy." The Gorizian Camino ends after 80 kilometres on Sveta Gora, visited by thousands of pilgrims over the centuries and where there is a special energy. In good weather, you can see the whole route from the finish line all the way to its start in Aquileia.
